Living in the City-ish
So, it’s been about two months and a half since I moved out. I live in a pretty urban area. It’s not a major downtown, but I’m in an area with a lot of apartment and condo complexes. There are people all around me. Growing up, I lived in an exurb, which is a small rural suburb with around 5-acre lots. There were only 8 houses on our little road. It was relatively secluded compared to where I live now.
I always hated having so much land to mow (about 4 acres). We didn’t have a tractor, just a riding lawn mower. I always thought of myself wanting to live in the city. However, now that I’m in that type of situation, I don’t really like it all that much. I’d rather have more privacy. I can’t go outside without seeing someone. I’m not sure I want to shun off suburbs entirely, but I don’t like being surrounded by people.
I find it interesting that I grew up wanting to leave the country, but now that I’ve had a little taste of city life I want to go back to the sticks.
Update 10/19/2007: Last weekend I went home and my whole family laid out on the trampoline and looked at the stars. Living in the “city” now, I only get to see about 20 or 30 stars at night. At home we could see millions. As long as I live in the city, I’m going to miss the country sky. On nice clear nights, I loved to just go outside and stare at the brilliant display of twinkly lights that God so wisely used to decorate the sky.
